2024 Perry “Region 5 North” Contest Summary

Huge thanks to Commander Rich Owen for offering me the opportunity to fly his beautiful new Schleicher AS33 Es this season in the build up towards the 2024 FAI World Gliding Championships to be held in our homeland at Uvalde, Texas. The glider is a weapon, and I think I am just beginning to learn the true potential of the sailplane. I started a little cautiously, but slowly moved forward until yesterday in a difficult and ultra short 1.5 Area Task I was able to get second for the day and surpass the two competitors who remained ahead of me going into the final day. Fortunately, US Rules scoring helped me out with a rather liberal helping of points for a fairly short albeit exciting task. Congratulations to all my fellow pilots, including my team mate Sean Murphy who I was able to do some valuable pseudo team flying despite not being allowed to team fly with radio use according to the SSA rules. “Somehow” the SSA (USA’s Soaring Govt) has managed to add contests into the IGC rankings in a very peculiar way. 🤔

This FAI Gliding WORLD (isn't that ironic? lol) ranking appears to have been “earned” at a US Regional competition (Perry) for the open class division. This was not (to the best of my knowledge) a US nationals from what is listed in the ranking (REGIONALS). It was flown under US RULES, using US tasking (Area, MATS) and very likely included no racing tasks. Other US pilots, for example ;-), have won 3 US Nationals in a row in 18m (highly attended, strong pilots by both US and FAI ranking standards) in 2021, 2022, and 2023. From an FAI and US rankings perspective, ALL of those contests were far tougher from a ranking of competition pilot quality perspective and all three were US NATIONALS COMPETITIONS, not SSA regionals. But, amusingly, that US pilot is ranked 200th roughly. Yet another example of how the SSA’s beloved US rules are problem (as yet another measurable objective statistic) and how having multiple ranking systems (and no consistent processes) is a highly predictable failure. This FAI ranking is clearly wrong (as are the others that "somehow" came in from these Regionals). This is obvious, yet nobody bothers to fix it. Many have complained but the authors of these contest rankings seem to have ignored those complaints. Very, very interesting. Team 7T is enjoying our US National Soaring Championship CHARLIE SPRATT 18 Meter Class Trophy immensely! After three years of winning it, but not taking it home with us to enjoy, we finally got it (thank you!). It is exquisitely detailed, solid bronze (I believe), and absolutely beautiful. A really cool soaring trophy! I'm very proud to have my name on it. Having three in a row in a field as competitive as we have today is a feather in the cap for sure. The fact that there was no name plate on the trophy when we received it remains our favorite part of the entire accomplishment. We had to have a plate made. It was wonderful. It makes having the trophy in our home, to enjoy for an extended period, incredibly satisfying. So, here it is again for everyone to see. Long sigh of satisfaction..................... It's time for a quiet victory lap. It just is. Literally ALL (100%, even AHRS) of my opinions expressed in years of various RAS comments (which they triggered and turned into shit fights as they do with anything they don’t like on RAS, also failed now 😂) and on social media are winning in the Soaring Society of Americas desperate annual contest pilot US rules “opinion poll” despite a decade of various desperate good old boy efforts to try and “tune out” my influence. Hi John. I utilized a long list of sensible, well thought out arguments supported by facts and data 📊. It drive them absolutely nuts. They responded with the pathetic good/nixon FAI rules white paper 😂 offered without counterpoint (aka me, or any of the many other pilots who want FAI rules back in the USA, not hybrid bullshit they came up with after losing the first poll) and posted prominently on the SSA website as if it was law. This along with tons of other shady side bar whispering and internal oligarch political efforts. I laugh and laugh as I read these opinion polls (question logic is see thru and comical) each year and especially laugh the comments (hysterical). Sure there are stubborn tyrants ranting every year about how great US rules are. But every year the GoB’s lose ground, years after I have rested my case. Today the US competition pilots speak for me. And every year the GOB's seem a little more desperate to remain relevant. It brings me so much joy to see so many other pilots echoing my positions and arguments. ITS VERY SIMPLE, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY ZERO UTILITY TO DEVELOPING AND MAINTAINING A SEPARATE RULE SYSTEM FOR THE USA. THIS IS A FACT. THE FAI RULES ARE NOT "DANGEROUS." IN FACT THE SSA RULES ARE ARGUABLY MORE DANGEROUS (Close proximity high speed descending and climbing 2 min max altitude start, criss cross crash assigned turn points (completely unpredictable), having to re-learn new rules constantly or just not even bothering. Etc, etc.) It makes absolutely ZERO SENSE to hold the USA hostage to a failed experiment poorly managed rules system (with no software to support it) except to a tiny minority of stubborn GOB tyrants who have banded together politically to keep FAI rule supporters out of the commuters and to maintain (against the will of the majority of US contest pilots) the failed US rules or die trying. Its just sad. Of course this says nothing about their constant efforts to bait the FAI into adopting their experimental rules via US representation (which goes into the role for the majority US contest pilots who want FAI rules, hating the FAI rules and only are there to change them to their minority position). They don’t like my challenge, not one bit. Good! I was a breath of fresh air for the sport of soaring (entering it at 41) both in terms of views on using a sport as an experiment with ZERO VALUE and in my competitive skill. I was probably a decade ahead of my time, but was damn right (US rules are a failure in many ways), and absolutely spot about the fact that these rules should never have been permanent if not adopted by the FAI despite their 20 year tantrum against the FAI (to which I entered in the middle), which is ongoing. Watching them trigger, plot, dance, tear their hair out, flat out panic (in Good Old Boy circles), attack, and get angry is, sadly, kinda fun. Every way they try and re-ask the same questions (when they get answers they don’t like) on their poll, the answers remain clear. The majority of USA's contest pilots continue to vote for STRAIGHT FAI RULES, just like the rest of the world, despite the GOB's fear tactics and endless propaganda campaigns (poll question commentary aka answer this way!). Sadly, most of these folks trying to force Us rules either do not fly contests anymore or are entirely uncompetitive, or both. Yet the inject themselves into the conversation and desperately try and keep the sport from changing into what the majority wants. This is the opposite of a democracy. US 🇺🇸 Soaring Team Ranking for 18m Class 2024

Sweep 🧹 😂 Very satisfying and enjoyable to win “three in a row” of the USA’s 🇺🇸 most challenging class (18-meter) at three of the most challenging contest venues in the United States! Nephi, Utah is the USA’s best high speed mountain 🏔️ flying site. World record speeds were achieved by many of the pilots flying at this contest, including the fastest competition task speed ever recorded. Bermuda High is one the USA’s best East Coast “flat-land” thermal soaring sites and the conditions for this one were significantly suppressed making it a great weak weather test. And Uvalde is, simply put, the world famous soaring cloud street factory, home of two world championships with a third coming up in 2024.

Report on the 2023 DF95 USA Nationals hosted by Corpus Christi Yacht Club (Texas)

Results are not available as of this entry. The DF95 class really needs to improve its process of posting regatta results somewhere consistently. Facebook (Farce-book) should not be the (official or unofficial) means of this. I don’t mean to nag, but I think this issue happens too often. Let’s get our shit together folks. The top 5 were Peter Feldman, Brian Shores, Steve Landeau, Sean Fidler, and Barr Batzer. Update: here are the final results, which became available at some point after the event. Peter Feldman was outstanding. A well deserved championship. It’s slightly frustrating to experience his dominance but I am, of course, very happy for him! He is getting even better which is scary. Simply put, he is just on a different level than the rest of us. I fear he is getting bored sometimes. Brian Shores was also outstanding at this event and is clearly improved over the last time I saw him sail. I understand he is practicing a fair bit with the Houston fleet and it shows. He is going to be very tough in this class moving forward. He has the potential to challenge Peter as we saw early in this event when he led, and was tied with Peter. Impressive. Steve Landeau was sailing very well as always. He was not burdened by his addiction to above and beyond volunteer roles at this event, which often hinders his focus slightly, and he was predictably sailing very well here without having lots of other chores. With more continued focus he would be even better but that’s not in his nature 😉. He simply loves to help others. Lucky for us all on multiple levels. I was disappointed with my event. I came out of the blocks poorly playing with a new tuning method that I had not tried yet, let alone mastered loosing dozens and dozens of points in the process. Stupid. I made far too many tactical mistakes (partially related to the poor boat speed) and did not really produce “A-fleet” level average boat speed until (maybe) the final day. I spent the first day trying to mimic Craig Richard’s excellent tuning but with my older Cat Sail (4+mm of luff curve vs. Craig’s special 2mm luff curve sails which his tuning technique is based on) and I simply did not make it work consistently (or at all frankly). Stupid. I learned a ton by the end of the event but thoroughly confused myself early. I’m honestly still a little unsure of where to go next on set up. I did order new sails with reduced luff curve so that should be interesting when the next large event comes along. For example, I was leading a race or two on Friday somehow, but was regularly “gobbled-up” by the group and fell to (on average) 6-8th from a leading position early in the race. I couldn’t point when I really needed to. This was all subtle, but significant in a class that is so competitive. I also felt I was not accelerating properly out of tacks. Ultimately, I just could not make the very low mainsail boom position work and was ultimately forced to bring the main into the inner transom corner (standard) and reduce twist substantially. I had simply been sailing to wide on everything, and that made me a one trick pony at best. All that said, clearly Craig RIchards makes all that work. I hate pinching, and generally do not like the tuning process for the DF95 because the fleet tends to pinch significantly at a nationals level. That is quite unnatural for me. I much prefer the IOM which can be tuned very accurately with a ruler and a tuning guide, but I also think that is because I sail the IOM far more often and I am more confident in that boat. If I am going to get better in the DF95 class (something that I really want to do) I must sail it more regularly, and unfortunately that isn’t an option at the moment as the Detroit fleet is very small and just does not have enough strong sailors to practice with. Most (if not all) of the guys in the top 10 at this 2023 DF95 National Championship are regularly sailing the DF95 against top sailors at their club (or have far more experience). Peter and Steve just sailed the US Sailing CoC’s a month ago (which Peter won). I’m basically the only one who isn’t sailing the DF95 regularly at their home club or in a state with lots of comps (like Florida), that I know of, with maybe the exception of (Ivey) 109. I think more experience is essential and have come to the solemn conclusion that my one regatta every 6 months approach has long since reached its apogee. Finally Barr Batzer (5th overall) is sailing very well and we were basically neck and neck most of the event. He has really improved since last year. He is very fast and is easily capable of getting to the top step with Brian and Peter. Ultimately he had a couple bad races on the final day, which can happen to all of us. He will win one of these one day I’m certain. Overall, this class is really strong. The DF95 is a great RC racing sailboat in which many can get to 90% performance relatively quickly and be competitive. The A fleet of this event was extremely tough from top to bottom and getting out of the B fleet was absolutely not assured as many found out over the course of the weekend. The regatta was incredibly fun and challenging. The races were rather intense at times as it often is in the DF95 class. Lots of contact and basic rules issues. This is the nature of such small, quick, even boats and heats with over 20 boats on the starting line. I really wish we could somehow limit these events to 10 boats or so (and had 3 fleets for example). I am still not comfortable pushing the starting line as hard as the average A fleet sailor, and often end up in the second row, which is often fatal for overall hopes. I felt I was also fouled a number of times in the final 5 seconds of the starts by boats dive bombing in from behind and it was often very difficult to execute a protest as I could not see easily see who the contact came from. Not sure that I have a solution unfortunately other than trying to find a way to stay out of the clumps, but the line is often biased enough that a favored end knife fight is the only competitive choice. Finally, the Corpus Christi Yacht Club team (John Kelsey, Mark Foster (PRO), Ken Weeks, and the large group of volunteers including a dedicated mark set boat with extremely competent sailors on board all day, every day) were absolutely outstanding. This is a fantastic group of people and sailing RC events (or any event) at CorpusChristiYC is a true privilege on the level of the finest RC regattas that I have attended thus far.
